High potential and gifted education

At Molong Central School, we are committed to identifying and nurturing the diverse talents and abilities of our students through our High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program. HPGE, refers to educational programs and strategies that cater to students who demonstrate exceptional ability, high potential, or advanced learning needs in one or more areas, including intellectual, creative, social-emotional or physical domains.

Intellectual Domain
Students identified in the intellectual domain demonstrate advanced cognitive abilities, including exceptional reasoning, problem-solving skills, and a capacity for complex and abstract thinking. These learners often exhibit a strong curiosity and a deep understanding of academic concepts well beyond their peers.

Creative Domain
The creative domain encompasses students who show originality, imagination, and inventiveness in their thinking and work. These students excel in generating novel ideas, approaching problems from unique perspectives, and expressing themselves through various creative outlets such as art, writing, or design.

Social-Emotional Domain
Students with high potential in the social-emotional domain demonstrate advanced empathy, leadership, and interpersonal skills. They often possess heightened awareness of their own and others’ feelings, and they are able to navigate social situations with maturity and sensitivity, sometimes showing strong ethical reasoning and a desire to contribute positively to their community.

Physical Domain
The physical domain includes students who exhibit exceptional motor skills, coordination, and physical abilities. These students may excel in sports, dance, or other physical activities, demonstrating not only talent but also motivation and persistence to develop their physical gifts.

Our approach aligns with the Department’s guidelines found in the High Potential and Gifted Education Policy and Learning and Wellbeing Framework, which emphasise tailored educational experiences that challenge and extend students’ learning in ways that are meaningful and engaging.

At Molong Central School we provide individualised educational plans (IEPs) for identified HPGE students. These plans are designed collaboratively with students, parents, and teachers to target specific learning goals and interests, ensuring an enriched and responsive curriculum. Our IEPs encompass access to a comprehensive HPGE opportunities calendar, featuring extracurricular activities that promote creativity, critical thinking, leadership, and specialised skill development beyond the classroom.

In addition to these extracurricular options, extension opportunities are embedded within the regular curriculum to provide ongoing challenge and stimulation. This includes differentiated learning tasks, enrichment projects, and access to advanced resources, all aimed at fostering a growth mindset and helping students reach their full potential.
